Ford AWD system2013 Escape adds to safety system

The all-wheel drive system used in the new Ford Escape aims to improve handling and give drivers more control, and features new feedback sensors and software that calculate where the driver wants to go, as opposed to where he or she is heading.

The system, which was developed in-house by Ford, pre-emptively reassesses conditions every 16 milliseconds – about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye according to the automaker. The system will split the power between the front and rear axles depending on the situation.

Date is gathered from 25 external signals, including wheel speed, accelerator pedal position and steering wheel angle. Ford says that Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control, are available together for the first time in an SUV.

The system will change the amount of torque being sent to either the front or rear wheels depending on what the driver is doing. For instance, if a driver is understeering – the tendency to go straight while cornering – the system will automatically send more torque to the rear wheels to help counteract that effect and provide more neutral steering.

With the new Escape, the driver can actually see power distribution displayed on a screen inside the dash.
