GM snags monthly sales lead

General Motors managed to steal the monthly Canadian sales lead from Ford in October, selling a total of a 19,542 vehicles, good for a nine percent increase over the same month in 2010.

The automaker was led by its full-size pickup truck lineup, whose sales increased 23 percent year-over-year, and the Buick Regal, which saw a 128 percent increase. The Chevrolet Cruze compact car, meanwhile, finished with more than 32,000 sales in its first full year on the Canadian market.

Ford was right behind GM with a total of 19,190 units moved, a decrease of 2.4 percent over October, 2010. Despite the drop in overall year-over-year sales, the Explorer’s numbers shot up 368 percent compared to last year, while the Focus increased by 12 percent.

Chrysler finished with a total of 17,049 sales, good for a 12 percent increase compared to last October. Passenger cars led the charge, with Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sales going up 127 and 110 percent, respectively, over the same month last year. Not to be outdone, Ram truck sales went up by 53 percent, while the Jeep Wrangler increased 64 percent over last October.

Two more automakers that saw big gains over last year were Kia, which was up 15 percent compared to last October, and Volvo, which saw a 13 percent year-over-year increase. Kia was helped by the Sportage, which saw sales go up by nearly 80 percent over October, 2010, and Rondo (+37 percent). Volvo was led in sales by the XC60 (170 units) and S60 (141 units).

Toyota finished the month with a three percent increase over last year (14,980 sales total) while BMW saw a year-over-year increase of one percent. When combined with its Mini division, it moved 2,863 units total.

Not faring as well was Nissan, which fell 14 percent with a total of 5,970 sales, Honda, which saw a 13 percent year-over-year decrease with a total of 11,232 sales, Subaru, with fell almost five percent with 2,863 total sales, and Porsche, whose sales went down from 185 last October, to 120 in October, 2011.
