Promoters consider “green” racing

With all this talk about all future powertrains likely employing some form of electrification, what can motorsports fans expect from their favourite weekend entertainment?

If IMSA and ALMS have their way, they’ll get a new form of racing.

The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) and the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) are working with strategic sustainability project specialists Quimera on a joint venture to launch the next generation of sustainable motorsport.

The triumvirate envisions the launch of a new international Electric Vehicle (EV) series for the 2013 racing season, saying the series will represent the first clean technology professional motorsport championship that will include various categories and also remain open to any OEMs eager to showcase and develop their green technologies in a cost-controlled environment.

Between now and then, the group plans to educate investors, the general public, media, sponsors and other interested parties of motorsports’ impending embrace of clean technology. That includes a version of the Quimera AEGT All-Electric GT car in demonstration runs at select American Le Mans Series race events in 2012.

A clear international scope has already been outlined with the intention to invite any national governing body, promoter or country from around the world to join the ground-breaking motorsport project. The championship is also looking to include motorcycles as part of its event roster, and has already lined up the support of the TTXGP World Championship, an international electric motorcycle racing series.

Among the proposed car classifications are AEGT (powertrains up to 600kW/804hp with carbon fibre chassis and allowing for inventive bodywork design), Touring GT (an open category with OEMs invited, using powertrains up to 350kW/469hp with carbon or tubular chassis), F3 type open wheel (single-seat cars with powertrains up to 350kW/469hp and carbon fibre chassis) and Showroom Stock (slightly modified road legal cars with powertrains up to 150kW/201hp).
