If you are confused about the care your car needs, just ask. When your car is in for repairs, you can request an estimate. Most shops will offer a written estimate for the required repairs after they do an inspection. However, don’t expect the diagnostic to be free. If you decide not to proceed with the repairs there likely will be a charge.

The reason is that diagnostics take time and effort, dismantling parts of the car if required, locating and pricing parts, estimating labour charges. However, most shops will wave the cost of writing the estimate if you proceed with the repairs at the shop. And there is an added bonus – in most jurisdictions, legislation does not allow the repairer to exceed the estimate by more than 10% without calling the customer, explaining the reasons for exceeding the estimate and receiving permission to proceed.

However; having said all that, there are some repairs that are not easily estimated. These include drivability issues, electrical failures and restorations. Body work also falls under the “I can’t estimate it accurately” category.

It’s interesting, too, to note that insurance companies return to repair shops on a regular basis to administer “additionals” for hidden damage.

As I have often said: having a good relationship with your service provider is paramount in getting the most out of your car. What’s the definition of a good shop? The one that supplies service that meets simple criteria: “safe, reliable service at a fair price”.

If you feel you’re not getting that from you current service supplier …. Switch shops!
