The Porsche Boxster sees a dramatic change for the 2013 model year, with an exterior redesign that’s anything but subtle and all sorts of new stuff happening behind the scenes.

The latest generation of Porsche’s two-seat convertible sees it receive a new lightweight body, completely revamped chassis, reduction in weight, and larger wheelbase and track.

The Boxster also gets larger wheels and new electromechanical power steering system that the automaker says “significantly (enhances) the mid-engine sports car’s driving dynamics.”

The Boxster will initially be available in “base” and “S” models, with the former getting a new 2.7-litre flat-six engine that makes 265-horsepower (10 more than its predecessor) and the latter using a 3.4-litre flat-six that delivers 315-horsepower (an increase of five-horsepower).

Both come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, with Porsche’s PDK 7-speed dual clutch setup available as an option. Equipped with the PDK transmission, the Boxster accelerates from 0 – 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, while the Boxster S does the same sprint in 4.7 seconds.

Porsche notes that both models are up to 15 percent more fuel efficient than the outgoing model.

The 2013 Boxster employs a completely redesigned, fully electric cloth top that now folds into a convertible compartment lid. Optional on the Boxster is a Sport Chrono Package that adds dynamic transmission mounts for the first time. Also available is Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with a mechanical rear axle differential lock.

The newest Boxster will be available in U.S. showrooms in the summer of 2012.
