Special models tout famous city

With new Mini models like the Roadster and Countryman hogging the spotlight in recent months, the British automaker is set to put a renewed focus on the classic two-door, four-seat Mini Cooper with the release of two new special edition vehicles.

The Mini Bayswater and Mini Baker Street will both be available around the world just ahead of the London Summer Olympic Games, in the spring of 2012. Like the Mini Camden and Mayfair special editions released in 2010, the newest Minis are titled after famous London locations.

Named for a bustling area located near Notting Hill and Hyde Park, the Bayswater edition has a focus on the sporting nature of the brand according to Mini. It’s decked out in a model-exlusive blue paint job, and gets 17-inch light-alloy wheels.

The Mini Bayswater package will be available with the Mini Cooper, Mini Cooper S, Mini Cooper D and Mini Cooper SD. No less than four engine options are available for the vehicle, and it comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, though a 6-speed automatic is offered.

To help set it apart from other Mini models, “Bayswater” lettering can be found on the side indicator surrounds, door sills and seat tags.

Inside, the Mini Bayswater uses leather seats that, like the exterior, come in a model-exclusive colour, complete with side bolsters that have a metallic sheen and blue and grey contrast stitching. Two-tone contrast stitching also adorns the gearshift/selector lever, hand brake and floor mats.

Drivers will be looking at piano black cockpit trim strips, and pressing on stainless steel pedals.

The Mini Baker Street puts more of a focus on the automaker’s self-professed “trendsetting” style, and is named for the nearby locations of the fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, as well as Madame Tussauds waxworks museum.

The Mini Baker Street exterior is decked out in an exclusive grey paint colour, though two other colours – white and black – are also available. The racing stripes on the hood veer out in a subtle “V”-shaped design, while the light-alloy wheels are available in 16-inch, 6-star twin-spoke designs.

Like the Mini Bayswater, the Mini Baker Street gets special lettering near the side indicators, as well as the door sills and seat tags. The exterior also includes front fog lights.

The interior of the vehicle includes an onboard computer, leather steering wheel, chrome accents, lighting package and height adjustment for the driver’s seat. Mini says several other optional add-ons are available beyond the Baker Street model’s standard equipment.

The Mini Baker Street will be available as a Mini One, Mini Cooper, Mini One D or a MINI Cooper D and will also come with a standard 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
