The new Ford Shelby GT500 convertible serves as the celebratory vehicle of the 20th anniversary of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT). The division was launched at the 1992 Chicago Auto Show

Among the nameplates in the SVT line-up are the Ford GT, Mustang Cobra R, Lightning and Raptor pickups, and the Shelby GT500KR.

More from the 2012 Chicago Auto Show

The first SVT offering – the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra – featured a 235-hp 5.0-litre V8. The Shelby GT500 is a bit more powerful – 650 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque are pumped out by the 5.8-litre supercharged V8, making for quick getaways.

Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers (adjustable at the push of a button between normal and Sport modes) keep it firmly planted in corners, and Brembo brakes bring everything to halt quickly.

Wrap it all up with an optional Performance Package and you have car that is 3.5 seconds quicker around the renowned Sebring International Raceway than the outgoing model. The Performance Package can itself be upgraded to a Track Package.

Nearly every component of the drivetrain was optimized to handle the boost in performance, including new cross-drilled engine block and headers, updated camshaft profiles, new carbonfibre driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and rear axle.

To mark the anniversary milestone for SVT, the new convertible will feature a lighted sill plate.

The car will be built at Flat Rock,Michigan.
