Toyota says its 1/X concept compact hybrid offers a glimpse into the next era of automotive technological design, redefining from its very roots the idea of what it means to be environmentally considerate.

Pronounced 1/Xth (as in a fraction), the name is derived from its vehicle mass, fuel consumption and emissions output, each totalling a fraction of what other vehicles in its class would attain.

The 1/X features the interior space of the current Prius hybrid at approximately one-third that vehicle’s weight. Carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) is used throughout the body frame, to achieve an overall weight of 420 kg (926 lbs.). The CFRP material is lighter and stronger than traditional metals, creating a shock-absorbing like structure with cross-sections that help absorb energy during an impact.

The aerodynamic shape and unique cabin design result in smaller pillars, allowing passengers more visibility and helping to create a greater sense of openness and freedom. The enviro-friendly roof is produced from kenaf and ramie plants to improve heat insulation, emit less carbon dioxide, increase the amount of light entering the cabin and reduce noise.

Inside, four ultra-lightweight seats are made from polyester fibre that is knitted three-dimensionally for added comfort. The material functions like a spring or damper that helps create a cushiony feel for occupants.

The light weight of the Toyota 1/X allowed designers to equip the vehicle with smaller and thinner wheels to aid fuel economy and reduce splash, making the 1/X not just environmentally-conscious, but community-friendly as well.

In consideration of pedestrians and oncoming traffic, the 1/X is equipped with an LED lighting system that sweeps under and across the large windshield. At sunset, the entire surface of the LED system softly illuminates the entire front surface to help eliminate glare emanating from its headlights. The LED system surrounds the headlights with a soft light, helping to prevent glare from striking oncoming cars and nearby pedestrians.

Powered by an ultra-small hybrid powertrain (one quarter the weight of the Prius powertrain) located under the rear seat, the ultra-lightweight 1/X further reduces the fuel-consumption from that of Prius. The system combines a home rechargeable plug-in hybrid unit with a small 500cc flexible-fuel engine.

The hybrid plug-in concept uses a home-rechargeable lithium-ion battery to grant the 1/X the possibility of traveling over 965 km (600 miles) on a 15-litre tank of fuel. Acceleration is reported to be equal to Prius.

The Toyota 1/X concept had its world debut at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, and was shown to North Americans at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show.
