Moving ever-closer toward a full production model, Mercedes-Benz is showing off its Vision GLK FREESIDE at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. When it goes to production in 2008, it will be the third sport utility vehicle in Mercedes' lineup and also the most compact.

As Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG, puts it best when he says: "There's one thing that hasn't changed: if a Mercedes has a G in its name, it has to perform exceptionally in all conditions."

And to help this concept perform exceptionally, it has been fitted with a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder Bluetec diesel engine, making it very fuel efficient compared to its larger, more powerful siblings. The engine is combined with a 7-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, meaning it will be as performance-ready as it is fuel-efficient. It produces 170-horsepower with a two-stage turbocharger system.

Safety begins with a high-strength passenger cell and energy-absorbing deformation zones. A slew of air bags are included to keep occupants safe in the event of a collision (including front, side, curtain and a driver's knee air bag).

The exterior look borrows from several other past Mercedes vehicles according to the automaker. While it still has some angular styling cues, combined with taut lines and large, expansive surfaces, and typical body features of a functional off-road vehicle, such as short overhangs, an upright front end, slim roof pillars, a steeply raked windscreen and taut roof lines. Twenty-inch light-alloy wheels and muscular wheel arches can be found on the GLK as well.

The interior is typical Mercedes, with plenty of white leather, and a dashboard that uses three-dimensional trim to give the appearance of a roomier cockpit. The main focus according to Mercedes, is a trim tiered in matt, anthracite-coloured cebrano wood with white grain and a precision-tailored chrome trim strip. This element extends across the full width of the interior and divides the main body of the dashboard into three horizontal planes. The upper area is trimmed in black leather and encompasses the instrument cluster and the static COMAND APS central display.

The centre console has a 'G' button which gives the GLK a more aggressive demeanour, allowing it to increase its offroad prowess. It shifts the 7-speed transmission's shift points, though the driver can still choose a manual shift function using paddles on the steering wheel.
