Chevrolet Volt and more.

Chevrolet Volt was declared 2011 North American Car of the Year at a ceremony during media day at the NAIAS. The honour marks GM’s fourth such award, the last coming in 2008 for Chevrolet Malibu. The judging panel composed of print, broadcast and web journalists from Canada and the U.S., chose Volt over the Hyundai Sonata and Nissan Leaf.

Meanwhile, Ford’s new Explorer was chosen as North American Truck of the Year, a category that has been dominated by entries from the blue oval, which has won seven times in the 18-year history of the awards, including last year with the Transit Connect. The other two finalists for 2011 were the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

This year, more than 50 vehicles were considered by the panel of 49 judges. To be eligible for consideration, a vehicle must be new or substantially changed.
