Chevrolet goes Sonic

Chevrolet has many stars back in its line-up these days; some of the standouts include the 2011 North American Car of the Year, the Chevrolet Volt and, after a spirited musical performance played out on iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches by around 20 Gen-Yers (an iParty I guess), the all-new Chevrolet Sonic. The 2012 Sonic fills the outgoing Aveo's shoes and the automaker is showing both five- and four-door models. The latter is a North American premiere while the hatchback also debuted in L.A.

The standard 1.8-litre Ecotec engine makes 135 hp and 125 lb.-ft. of torque and can be paired with either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic. An available 1.4-litre Ecotec turbo makes 138 hp and 148 lb.-ft. of torque through a six-speed manual.

Class-leading rear seat roominess and cargo space and with an eye toward driving dynamics, Sonic ought to make some waves against the recently introduced Ford Fiesta and Mazda2 cousins. USB and Bluetooth are only a couple of the cool connectivity features today's buyers expect that will be standard.

The Sonic Z-spec Concept also made an appearance to complete the trifecta. This colourful subcompact is outfitted with a bevy of tuner parts.
