The C30 hatchback is brand new to the Volvo lineup, and already the little guy is being poked and prodded and modified. All in the name of the environment, though.

Volvo has unveiled the ReCharge concept, which in essence is a C30 hybrid that runs on battery power and a more classic flexifuel combustion engine. Volvo says that the ReCharge can run for about 100 km. on a single charge, and a full charge takes about three hours. "However," says Magnus Jonsson, senior vice president of Research and Development at Volvo Cars, "even a one-hour quick charge should provide enough charge to drive about 50 kilometres."

And even when driving using solely the 1.6-litre, four-cylinder gas-powered engine, the car still has an average fuel consumption rating of 5.5 L/100 km. The engine is programmed to start up automatically when 70% of the battery power has been used, but the driver still has control over when the flexifuel engine goes on and off via a button in the instrument panel.

The Volvo ReCharge Concept combines a number of technological innovations to become a "series hybrid" - a vehicle with no mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels.

The battery pack is integrated into the luggage compartment and uses lithium-polymer battery technology. The batteries are designed to have a useful life beyond that of the car itself.

Despite all the environmental benefits and electric power used in the ReCharge, it still has a 0-100 km/h rating of nine seconds, and it has a top speed of 160 km/h.

Even more interesting is the fact that the ReCharge eliminates friction of mechanical gears thanks to each wheel getting its own individual electric motor. This also means it's an all-wheel drive car. Mechanical efficiency and traction are maximized according to Volvo, and since the car doesn't have a transmission found in today's conventional cars, there is no need for a gear selector.

All you theoretically need to use the ReCharge every day is a commute of less than 100 km. to and from work, and an available plug outlet at home and/or at work.
