If you ask Lamborghini, it's jumping ahead two generations with its brand new model, the Aventador 700-4.

The Aventador 700-4 is the replacement for the retired Murciélago, and despite the familiar scissor doors and name inspired by a famous bull, the Aventador 700-4 uses a new 12-cylinder engine that makes - as the vehicle's name suggests - 700-horsepower and 509 lb.-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm. The V12 is mated to a unique seven-speed Independent Shifting Rod transmission.

As big as the Aventador 700-4 is, weight is kept down thanks to generous use of lightweight carbon fibre, highlighted by a carbon fibre body shell that helps with rigidity.

The '4' in the coupe's name signifies its use of a permanent all-wheel drive system. The driver also has a Drive Select Mode System which allows him or her to choose from three different characteristics - Strada (road), Sport and Corsa (track).

Options include a transparent engine cover, black painted wheels and brake calipers in yellow, gray or orange (black calipers come standard), an upgraded audio system, and park assistance systems that includes a reversing camera. Thirteen exterior colours will be available at launch, including three matte colours.

The vehicle was designed at Centro Stile Lamborghini in Sant’Agata Bolognese and will be produced in an all-new production facility in Sant'Agata Bolognese. Though the design follows recent Lamborghinis' low slung profile (the Aventador 700-4 is only 1,136 mm. tall), the automaker says the surface of the roof has a new geometry that allows for great spaciousness for passengers.

The first deliveries of the Aventador 700-4 will begin in late summer of 2011, and the suggested price for the newest Lamborghini will start at 379.700 (US).
