Audi adds a notch to A3 belt

Audi is taking the logical step in the development of its A3 compact hatchback – a four-door notchback in an overall package that is marginally smaller than the footprint of the current A3 hatch although it rides on a slightly larger wheelbase.

The sleek new body is enhanced with flush-fitting lights and smooth body work, narrow outside mirrors and flush door handles that extend out for access at a touch. Lightweight body and structural components help keep overall weight down to just 1,540 kg.

Inside, bright metal trim adds an upscale look reminiscent of aircraft design and instrumentation (with driver programmable feature to tailor the information displayed according to individual tastes), while slim front seat designs aid in improved knee room in the two rear seating positions. An improved multimedia system includes a touchscreen that extends out of the dash when in use. The interior can be turned into a WiFi hotspot, with iPad holders located in the back of the front seat headrests. Trunk space is rated at 410 litres.

Power is delivered by a 408 hp 2.5-litre direct injected five-cylinder turbo with 370 lb.-ft. of torque available from 1,600 rpm. Controlled by a seven-speed paddle-shifted S tronic dual clutch transmission sending power to all four wheels, zero to 100 takes just 4.1 seconds, and top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Fuel economy is rated at 9.1 L/100km on the European cycle.

The A3 concept rides on 20-inch light alloy wheels, 245/30R20 tires and uses a MacPherson front suspension and four-link rear setup, user defined by a five-mode driver selectable dynamic handling system (that also adapts engine and shift characteristics according to choice – Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Individual and Efficiency), with stability control.
