For those who like their vehicles big and powerful as well as luxurious, Cadillac has unveiled the next-generation 2007 Escalade.

The new Escalade features several changes, from the chassis to safety and interior systems to a new powertrain. It also has a new 6.2-litre, all-aluminum V8 engine that produces 403-horsepower and 417 lbs.-ft. of torque. It will have a base manufacturer's suggested retail price of $78,030.

To help it move into the new generation, the latest Escalade has a new, cleaner, more aerodynamic look according to Cadillac, though from the outside it appears smaller in stature. It takes styling cues from the Sixteen concept vehicle - such as a more detailed signature grille, front fender vent ports and layers of chrome accents.

To further help with its flowing design, elements such as wraparound fascias, styled mirrors and integrated running boards were integrated as well. The windshield features a faster angle and flows into the roofline, thus making for not only a more aerodynmic look, but allowing for improved fuel economy and reduced wind noise.

The front grille is flanked by high-intensity discharge headlamps and seven layers of chrome accents can be found on the side of the Escalade. The crisp exterior look is finished off at the rear with LED taillamps, an LED-lit centre high-mount stop light and even more chrome accents.

Also included are standard 18-inch wheels that can be upgraded to 22-inches (the larger ones are tailored to fit the wheel openings).

The flowing look continues into the interior, which is more spacious according to Cadillac. The instrument panel is positioned lower and moved forward for improved ease-of-use. The instrumentation gauges use white needles with blue light inlays with continuously lit, white-LED backlighting, Nuance leather-covered seats, leather-covered door trim and center console, fabric-covered interior pillars and an available heated steering wheel.

For even better accessibility, the 2007 Escalade includes new power fold-and-tumble second-row seats for easier entry to the third row of seats and a power-assisted rear liftgate which both opens and closes with the touch of a button. A remote starter is also standard.

Up front, the Cadillac SUV includes an optional 8-inch touch screen navigation system, DVD system with 8-inch screen and Bose 5.1 digital surround sound system.

Cargo room has increased by 4.2 cubic feet behind the second row seats and 2.3 cubic feet behind the third row seats. The third row folds flat for even more cargo room.

Under the hood, the 6.2-litre engine is exclusive to the 2007 Escalade. It uses variable valve timing for increased fuel economy and it is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that also incorporates 'tap' control, where the driver taps up or down on the shifter to manually change gears, without the use of a clutch.

For such a large vehicle, powerful brakes are needed, and the new Escalade uses four-wheel disc brakes and an all-new ABS system to help in this respect. These are both standard. For a softer ride, the vehicle includes a road sensing system which 'reads' the road and anticipates the best damping rates.

On the safety side of the things, available are roof-mounted head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for all seating rows and front-seat safety belt pretensioners that are linked to the vehicle's sensing system to provide segment-exclusive deployment in rear-end crashes. Also available are Stabilitrak stability control, tire pressure monitoring system, rear-view camera and ultrasonic rear parking assist, which can detect certain stationary objects in the path of the vehicle and send an audio warning to the driver.

The 2007 Cadillac Escalade will be available in the first quarter of 2006 and a longer wheelbase version will come later in the year.
