Honda has been awarded the 'Best New Alternative Power' award at the Montreal Auto Show for its Honda Civic Hybrid, as chosen by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada.

The popular Civic was redesigned for 2006 and the hybrid version was no exception. It incorporates a new generation of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system, giving it a fuel economy rating of 4.7 L/100km (city) and 4.3 L/100km (highway) - improved from the 2005 Civic Hybrid's figures of 4.9 and 4.6 L/100km. Horsepower on the 2006 Civic Hybrid is also increased by 18 per cent over its 2005 counterpart.

The 2006 Civic Hybrid uses a 1.3-litre i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine connected to an electric motor and Continuously Variable Transmission. It also integrates a new feature - the ability to shut off all four cylinders and use only its electric motor when in certain cruising situations. Also new for 2006, the engine can enter an idle mode when stopped at a red light. The engine starts up again when the brake pedal is released.
