Audi has taken the wraps off the second generation of its stunning TT Coupe, with evolutionary styling and a longer, wider stance for better handling stability. A roadster will come along later.

The Audi design team took the motif of circles and domes from the original and gave the new generation a sense of forward-motion. Although it is only slightly larger (5.5 inches longer, 3 inches wider) than the original, its stretched appearance makes the car look considerably bigger.

Audi's ASF Space Frame is 69 percent aluminum, with the remaining 31 percent steel components found at the rear end, so as to ensure balanced distribution of the axle loads. A retracted spoiler extends from the tailgate when the vehicle reaches a speed of 120 km/h.

Like its predecessor, the new TT Coupe is as a 2+2-seater with a 10 cubic-foot trunk that expands to 24 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded. Well-bolstered seats are available in three leather trims. The cockpit is angled toward the driver and incorporates some of the motifs from the original TT, most notably the three centre circular vents.

Standard features automatic climate control and single CD player. Options include adaptive cornering lighting system, parking assist, Bluetooth interface for cellular phones, and navigational system.

Power is supplied by a choice of two engines — a 200-hp turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder or a 250-hp 3.2 V6. Both use a 6-speed manual transmission to reach 100 km/h in around six seconds. Top speed is in the 240 to 250 km/h range.

Four cylinder models use front wheel drive and V6 models employ Audi's quattro permanent 4-wheel drive system. All models are optionally available with a dynamic S tronic dual clutch gearbox (sequential automatic).

Handling is enhanced through the use of a newly developed dynamic suspension that endows the car with neutral steering characteristics with a slight touch of understeer (the tendency to push to the outside of a turn). A magnetic ride damper system (variable damping that adapts to various driving scenarios to soften or firm up the shocks) is optional. Wheel sizes range from 16 to 19 inches.
