It's been five years, and BMW is now ready to show off the newest version of its little go-kart, the MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S. The coupe is now entering its second generation after plenty of success during the first.

The newest MINI retains much of what made it popular in the first place, especially in terms of exterior styling. It still has the unmistakeable MINI look but has a new hexagon radiator grille, making it almost look like it's smiling. The separation in the middle on the upper edge of the bumper on the first model has been dropped.

The front end of the new MINI extends out a bit further than before, making the MINI Cooper 60 mm longer than its predecessor, while the new MINI Cooper S is 61 millimetres longer. The reason for this growth is because of the larger engine as well as future safety regulations. Another noticeable change on the outside of the car is the new large round headlamps. Turn indicators have now been integrated into the headlamps. The rear of the MINI has grown to balance out the rest of the vehicle. There are 12 exterior colours to choose from and customers get to make their own choice of roof colours (either black or white).

The MINI Cooper S boasts a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine developing 175 hp. The engine is charged by a twin-scroll turbocharger. Benefiting from this particular configuration, the turbocharger builds up its power-boosting effect from low engine speed. Maximum torque of 177 lb-ft is maintained consistently in the range between 1,600 and 5,000 rpm, and when accelerating all out torque is increased briefly to 192 lb-ft by a short increase in turbocharger pressure (overboost).

The naturally aspirated MINI Cooper also has a displacement of 1.6-litres, but has a maximum output of 120 hp and 118 lb-ft. of torque. Both engine types come mated with a 6-speed manual transmission, and an optional 6-speed automatic is available.
