The fourth generation of BMW's 3 Series Cabriolet features a power retractable hardtop, for the first time.

Made of three lightweight steel elements, BMW's first-ever retractable solid roof opens in just 22 seconds and stows itself into the luggage compartment, Closing reverses the process and takes 23 seconds.

With the use of an electrohydraulic mechanism, the 3-piece steel roof opens automatically with each element resting above the others in order to create a compact package. The trunklid opens rearward to accept the folded roof and features an easy-close assist. And unlike many convertibles that store their tops in this manner, BMW manages to retain a pass-through from the cabin area to the trunk.

The hardtop also allowed BMW engineers to improve all-weather performance and cabin sound-control over the previous generation car, as well as increase window space. For example, the rear side windows are 30 percent larger those of the previous model and visibility is reportedly improved by 38 percent. Interestingly, the famed "Hofmeister kink", a traditional feature of BMW rear windows, has been retained.

Among the innovations on the new convertible is a "Cabriolet" mode for the automatic climate control system that maintains interior temperature according to exterior temperature and sun glare (rather than the interior temperature sensor), as well as a special leather upholstery that has modified colour pigments meant to reflect the sun's infra-red radiation and keep surfaces cooler. A new wind deflector is capable of swivelling quickly into position from either of the front seats.

Like the exterior, the interior of the new 3 Series Cabriolet features sleek and flowing lines, powerful and tense surfaces and a highly attractive combination of convex and concave design elements. Ambient lighting, mounted on the door and rear side panels, projects an indirect light effect.

Safety features include front and side-impact airbags, as well as self-deploying roll bars behind the rear head rests.

Power is supplied by either a 230-hp 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder engine (in the 328i) or the 300-hp twin-turbo 3.0 inline-6 (335i). Lightweight materials allow BMW to maintain its preferred 50/50 weight distribution.

BMW claims 0-100 km/h acceleration times in 5.8 seconds for the 335i with 6-speed manual models (6.0 seconds for Steptronic automatic models). The 328i reportedly takes 7.2 or 7.7, respectively. Top speed on both cars is governed to 210 km/h (240 on vehicles equipped with the Sport Package).

The optional 6-speed automatic transmission has been enhanced to provide reaction times that are 40 percent faster than conventional automatics. Additional paddles (included on 335i Sport models) on the steering wheel provide direct selection of gears in manual mode, without having to touch the shift lever.

A double-pivot McPherson strut front suspension and 5-link independent rear setup combine with a low centre of gravity, well-balanced axle load, special damper settings and vehicle-speed-dependent steering assist to provide the new Cabriolet with dynamic driving qualities befitting the BMW propeller.

Dynamic stability control and anti-lock brakes are both standard.

Because of the limited luggage space, both cars run on runflat 225/45R17 tires mounted on 17-inch alloy wheels. A tire pressure warning system warns when pressure in a tire drops more than 30 percent below the optimum level.
