The 2006 Dodge Viper SRT10 is the first in the latest generation of Vipers to be designed as a coupe, not a convertible.

"Demand for a Dodge Viper coupe started the day we introduced the Dodge Viper SRT10 convertible for 2003," said Dan Knott, Director, Street and Racing Technology (SRT), Chrysler Group. "The all-new 2006 Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe is a natural evolution of the heritage of the Dodge Viper, and gives enthusiasts exactly what they're looking for in the ultimate American sports car.

Not surprisingly, the 2006 Viper SRT10 has loads of power under the hood to move its 3,410 lbs. It comes equipped with an 8.3-litre V-10 engine that produces 500-horsepower and 525 lbs-ft. of torque. Ninety per cent of the torque is available anywhere from 1,500-5,600 rpm. The 8.3-litre engine (505 cubic inches) gives the new Viper the 'magic numbers' Dodge is toting - 500/500/500 (horsepower, torque, displacement).

The Viper is equipped with four Brembo brakes to help it come to quick stops (96-0 km/h in less than 100 feet), and it also comes with an anti-lock braking system. Those brakes are stopping two 18-inch wheels up front and 19-inch rear wheels, and all four wheels are forged aluminum. Handling is derived from a four wheel independent suspension.

Unlike many cases where a convertible is derived from a coupe, the Viper SRT10 coupe's starting point was the Viper convertible. Dodge says this results in a vehicle that doesn't lose torsional rigidity; it gains even more than what the convertible had. The only bodywork that the coupe shares with the convertible is the front fascia and fenders, hood and doors. The coupe has a new canopy and decklid, door side glass, rear fascia and taillights.

A design cue that has been brought back (from the original Viper GTS) is the 'double-bubble' roof, used for racers who wear helmets. Dodge actually incorporated helmet-wearing mannequins when designing the roof to help determine the roof's height and shape.

Inside you'll find a 310-watt, six-disc CD changer with seven speakers, a six-speed gear shifter and a two-tone colour scheme. There will only be one initial exterior colour available: blue with twin white racing stripes.

Dimensions include a 98.8-inch wheelbase, an overall height of 48.6 inches and an overall length of 175.6 inches. The weight distribution is split 49.4/50.6 front and rear. In addition, thanks to the lack of a drop top, there's an extra four cubic feet of trunk space.
