The most powerful GM passenger product ever was launched unto Canadian roads via the 2005 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.

The sixth-generation Corvette Z06 produces 500-horsepower and goes from 0-60 mph in less than four seconds and has a top speed of over 190 mph.

For the Z06, the engineers developed was a totally unique vehicle that has its own powertrain, body structure and chassis system which are distinct from other Corvette models, according to General Motors.

Some of the specs for the 2006 model include: a handbuilt 7.0-litre V8 engine, 7,000 rpm redline, carbon-fiber composite front fenders and front wheelhouses, a front fascia that includes a larger grille, cold air scoop and lower air splitter, 14-inch front disc brakes, 18-inch front wheels and 19-inch rear wheels (all aluminum).

The Z06 features a light aluminum body structure for optimum stiffness. It has the same wheelbase (2686-mm.) as past models, but sits on new wheels, tires and brakes.

The exterior features four large stainless steel exhaust pipes, special Z06 badging, a rear spoiler and wide rear fenders.

"The Z06 has been sculpted very carefully, with every element in its design serving a performance function," said Dave Hill, Corvette's chief engineer. "It also has a purposeful, menacing resemblance to the C6-R."

Chevrolet says that as powerful and race-like as the Z06 is, it is still meant to be a comfortable daily drivable vehicle. It has dual-zone air conditioning, heads-up display, leather seats and HID lighting.

Other interior features include a Bose audio system with in-dash six-CD changer, telescoping steering wheel, heated seats, navigation system and XM satellite radio.

The 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will begin in the second half of 2005 in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
