Mercedes-Benz has released the first official pictures of the new M-Class that will debut at the 2005 International Auto Show in Detroit. It will be built in 2005 as a 2006 model.

The latest M-Class sport utility vehicle will be available with two engines in North America: the ML350 has a 3.5-litre V6 that delivers 268-horsepower, while the ML500 has a 5.0-litre V8 that delivers 302-horsepower.

Both M-Class versions come standard with a 7-speed automatic transmission with sequential shifting, which allows drivers to change gears without a clutch. There will be buttons placed on the steering wheel to shift gears while allowing the driver to keep their hands on the wheel. The M-Class SUVs will also have a full-time four-wheel drive system.

The interior features a sport-oriented instrument panel, according to Mercedes-Benz. It will also include a multi-function steering wheel and more space for all passengers. There is two more inches of leg room for front passengers compared to last year's M-Class, and the vehicle itself is 150 mm longer, 71 mm wider and 9 mm lower on the road than the previous version.

For more off-road capabilities, the 2006 M-Class has a downhill driving aid, Start-off Assist and an off-road ABS system. There will also be an off-road option package available. It will include a two-speed transfer case with an off-road ratio, the ability to choose to manually or automatically select differential locks, and an adjustable suspension system. This could raise the vehicle from the ground by up to 110 mm. There is also a non-off-road adjustable suspension system available to drivers simply to increase comfort during on-road driving.

Mercedes-Benz included several notable safety features in its newest SUVs. These include adaptive two-stage air bags for the driver and front passenger, front side and curtain airbags, and belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seats. The 2006 M-Class SUV also boasts a new active head-restraint system that provides more protection for passengers in the event of a rear collision.

Their is also a redeveloped front and rear suspension. The double-wishbone front suspension was included to reduce tire vibration and road noise. The V6 models come standard with 17-inch tires, while the V8s come with 18-inch tires.

The rear seats split 63:37 when folded down and removable cushions can be ordered as an option, creating a level space in the rear of the vehicle for extra storage space.

Other options available are a DVD-based navigation system, an automatic climate control system, a rear park-assist system, and bi-xenon active light system.

Pricing will be announced at a later date.
