Pontiac introduced it's first-ever sport utility vehicle in 2005. Dubbed 'Torrent,' it features a highly-configurable interior cargo area and 'the spirited, responsive driving traits of a performance sedan.'

Pontiac is touting the Torrent as one of the largest vehicles in its class. The Torrent has a V-6 engine mated with a 5-speed automatic transmission and is available in front-wheel and all-wheel drive versions. The AWD version comes standard with ABS brakes. ABS is available in the FWD Torrent. Traction control comes standard on all models equipped with ABS brakes.

Pontiac isn't shy about the standard features included in the Torrent. This list includes 16-inch wheels, remote keyless entry, 60/40 split rear seat, dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, CD player with six speakers and power windows and air conditioning.

Optional equipment includes leather seats and steering wheel, 17-inch aluminum wheels, six disc CD changer with subwoofer, OnStar and XM satellite radio and power adjustable driver seat.

The Torrent has a configurable interior that can adjust to different cargo loads. The rear seats can be pushed right up against the front seats, adding five cubic feet of room, and the front passenger seat can fold flat. The rear cargo area has storage bins in the floor and wheel wells and a lightweight shelf that can be placed in various positions for differing needs. It can even be configured as a table (similar to the one found in the Chevrolet Equinox) for tailgate parties, according to Pontiac.

The interior features chrome accents and gives off a sporty feel thanks to seat upholstery that has a tailored feel and a steering wheel that takes styling cues from the Pontiac Solstice roadster. The instruments and gauges feature Pontiac's signature red backlighting.

Allowing for both on and off-road functionality, the Torrent has eight inches of ground clearance and short front and rear overhangs. The all-wheel drive model doesn't require any work on the driver's part to engage the all-wheel drive - it engages automatically when the vehicle senses it's needed.

Pontiac has added a performance sedan-like ride for responsive handling. It has a MacPherson strut front suspension and four-link independent rear suspension. A special tuning package is available for even tighter handling. Also adding to the car-like ride is the long 112.5-inch (2,857 mm) wheelbase.

Safety features include dual-stage front air bags, three-point safety belts for all five seating positions and side curtain air bags will be available as an option.
