The second concept to come from the Kia California Design studio, the KCD-II Mesa is an SUV featuring three rows of seating, 22" wheels and a long wheelbase that gives it more interior space and more stable, responsive characteristics, according to Kia.

The extremely aggressive-looking exterior of the KCD-II Mesa is meant to give off a rugged-yet-functional look. Some equipment on the outside of the SUV can be hidden when not in use such as retractable running boards and a trailer hitch below the rear bumper.

"Like Hummer and Jeep, Kia has a history of building military vehicles, and we drew on that legacy to bring utility to life in the Mesa," said Tom Kearns, chief designer for Kia Design at the Hyundai-Kia Motors Design & Technical Center.

The KCD-II Mesa features a very high beltline, which is meant to portray a sense of security and protection according to Kia.

Another unique addition to the Kia concept SUV is a large searchlight found on the front, right above the windshield. This is perfect for lighting up the waves at a nighttime surfing session, as Kia puts it. This searchlight, as well as the fog lamps, headlights and taillights, are all LEDs.

The Kia concept SUV houses Kia's existing 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 engine, but is large enough to accomodate future Kia powertrains. It includes full-time four-wheel drive with active torque transfer. This shifts power to the front and rear wheels according to the current conditions. The power can be shifted from 100 percent rear-wheel drive to a 50/50 split. It is also equipped with a limited-slip differential.

The interior is covered in a 'Sunset Orange' colour as an ode to Kia's off-road-racing heritage. All six bucket seats (two per row) are separated by a central tunnel console. This central tunnel serves as an armrest and storage compartment for all six passengers. It's also added to give each passenger a sense of individual space. All six seats are covered in leather, as is the steering wheel.

The controls in the centre console of the KCD-II Mesa aren't the typical knobs you'd find in most production cars and many concepts. The controls are toggle switches that can be adjusted by being pushed up or down, and these match the massive gear selector found just below the control panel.

The top of the KCD-II Mesa is covered with dual full-length panoramic glass sunroofs and between these sunroofs sits a 9" video monitor that exists as part of the vehicle's DVD system.

"The California design team truly created an original and inspiring design that certainly has possible future production potential," said Senior Executive Vice President and COO Yong-Hwan Kim. "The Mesa represents Kia's commitment to the essential North American market."
