Unlike the muscle car coupes of past years, this newest Dodge Charger has four doors, drawing the ire of purists. Dodge claims that making a sedan version makes it more convenient and functional.

To be built at the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant alongside the Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300, those designing the Charger were aiming at a vehicle that is both powerful and functional, according to Craig Love, who is vice president, rear-wheel-drive product team at Dodge.

The Charger features two engine types - a 250-horsepower V-6 or a higher-powered 340-horsepower (with 390 lbs.-ft of torque), Hemi-powered V-8. The V-8 version features cylinder deactivition, where four cylinders shut off when not needed, such as when cruising on the highway. This helps improve fuel economy by up to 20 percent.

To help assist the rear-wheel drive vehicle in slippery driving situations, the Charger includes an electronic stability program. ESP helps to maintain driver control. When the car detects a difference in the vehicle's intended course and actual course, it automatically compensates to fix the direction. The ESP system is combined with an anti-lock braking system, traction control and emergency brake assist.

The Charger sits on 18" wheels and has a 50/50 front/rear split in weight distribution which results in excellent handling. Dodge is also touting large trunk space for families and seating space for five adults.

Dodge describes the interior as having a driver-oriented cockpit that is sporty, functional and simple. Viper-inspired tunnel gauges with white faces are surrounded by silver satin accent rings. There's a lot more silver inside, including a trim bezel surrounding the shifter and more silver accents found throughout the centre stack.

In addition, the new Charger will be making its return to the racetrack in February of 2005. It will once again be part of the NASCAR Nextel Cup competiton, taking over for the Dodge Intrepid race cars which competed from 2001-2004.
