This newest Hyundai Sonata is significantly larger than its predecessor, coming in at two inches longer and taller with a one inch longer wheelbase than last year's version. It also has a larger width than many competitors, including the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima, giving it more interior space.

The interior itself has more legroom, headroom and shoulder room than the previous version and over 120 cubic feet of total interior volume. Seats were raised to make it easier to enter and exit the car and it comes standard with tilt steering (telescoping function on the LX model), power windows and auto up/down driver's window. Heated leather seats are standard on the LX model.

Setting itself apart from past versions, the newest Sonata includes a bold hood dome, four-barrel jeweled projector headlights and the V6 models come with chrome-tipped dual exhausts.

The new suspension consists of a front suspension uses double wishbone technology with coil springs, gas-filled hydraulic shock absorbers and anti-roll bar, and a sophisticated five-link rear suspension. The new suspension works to decrease wheel vibrations and offer a ride with better overall handling. Tested against the Camry and Accord, the 2006 Sonata was significantly quieter than both, especially at speeds above 68 mph.

Two engines are available in the Sonata - an 2.4-litre inline 4-cylinder and a the brand new 3.3-litre Lambda V6. Both engines feature Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) for increased fuel economy. The 4-cylinder is standard on Sonata GL and GLS models, while the V-6 is standard on GLS V6 and LX models.

A five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed shiftronic automatic is available on the 4-cylinder models and a new five-speed shiftronic automatic is available on all Sonatas equipped with the V-6 engine.

The new Sonata comes standard with six airbags (front, seat-mounted side-impact and side air curtain), active front headrests, ABS, and for the first time in the mid-size sedan segment, Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
