The fastest four-door vehicle in Bentley's history made an appearance at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. The Bentley Continental Flying Spur can hit a top speed of 312 km/h and can go from 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.

The new Bentley was inspired by the 1952 R-Type Continental and 1957 four-door Continental Flying Spur, where it takes its name from. It was designed at the same time as the Continental GT, making their looks consistent with each other.

It's powered by a big six-litre, 12-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces a massive 552-horsepower. It's mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The Continental Flying Spur has a 56:44 weight distribution for even better balance and traction.

It uses leather imported from northern Europe and wood veneers, which were added, among other sections, to the facia, front and rear consoles and dashboard. All wood is lacquered by hand, then machined and polished. The steering wheel is also trimmed by hand and the gear selector is chrome-trimmed. The vehicle is available in standard five or optional four-passenger layouts.

The front seats are 16-way electrically powered and are heated and cooled and the interior includes LED mood lighting. The electronic lumbar control has a massage function. Rear passengers also enjoy their own climate control system and electrically adjustable seats. They can also operate the front chair for maximum legroom if the front seat is unoccupied.

The 'infotainment' centre includes many new technologies including a satellite navigation system, 12-channel audio system, computerized suspension control, 6-CD changer in glovebox, bluetooth wireless technology, keyless entry and keyless ignition, stainless steel-faced foot pedals and driver footrest, optional electric sunroof and an anti-theft system. Though it includes all of this technology, Bentley insists it doesn't believe in overloading its cars with technology that isn't needed or will never be used.

The Flying Spur harkens back to older Bentleys with what the design team describes as an "unostentatious look." The rounded C-pillars and deep waistrails on the Flying Spur were very much a part of older Bentleys.

Small additions have been put on the Flying Spur. One example are the driver headrests, which were kept as small as possible to make the view for rear passengers as unobstructed as possible. Areas behind door levers and grab handles are protected by a metal plate to prevent rings and fingers from damaging the leather lining.

Exterior features that can be found standard on the all-wheel drive Flying Spur include bi-xenon headlamps with integrated washer jets, rear spoiler, 19-inch sport alloy wheels (19 and 20-inch split alloy wheels are optional), twin stainless steel exhausts and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

The automatic transmission can be changed to tiptronic mode, allowing the driver to manually change gears with the gearlever or steering wheel-mounted paddles.

The Continental Flying Spur is equipped with two front airbags, four side thorax airbags for the front and rear-seats and full-length curtain bags that extend to the back of the cabin. There is also a passenger occupant sensing system in the rear seats which automatically raises the rear headrests to ensure the best possible protection against whiplash.

The Continental Flying Spur will be available as of April 2005.
