Hyundai is rolling out its third-generation Accent sedan in 2006 and is touting it as the largest vehicle in its class thanks to an increase in all exterior dimensions.

The new Accent definitely has a more updated look to it, with sleeker lines, halogen headlamps and larger wheels and tires. It also includes body-colour door handles, mirrors, bodyside molding, and rear tailgate garnish.

When comparing it to the outgoing 2005 model, this newest Accent is 1.8 inches longer overall, giving it 1.5 inches of greater rear legroom, and one inch wider, giving it class-leading rear shoulder room of 53.1 inches. It's also three inches taller and it rides on a wheelbase stretched by 2.3 inches. With an interior volume of 104.4 cubic feet, Accent delivers the most interior volume (passenger and cargo) for a sedan in its class.

The new Accent will come in one trim level, the GLS. Its safety features include dual front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and roof-mounted side curtain airbags for both front and outboard rear seat occupants.

All Accents come equipped with front seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, which are designed to tighten the seatbelt in the event of a collision. All seating positions have adjustable headrests and the rear headrests are shingle-style for improved rear visibility.

Under the hood, the Accent houses a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine with CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing). It produces 110-horsepower (at 6,000 rpm) and 107 lbs.-ft. of torque (at 4,500 rpm) and by using the CVVT technology, it qualifies as an ultra low emissions vehicle (ULEV). It will be mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Other standard equipment that can be found inside the 2006 Accent is an AM/FM/CD audio system with 4 speakers, a tilt steering wheel, 8-way driver's seat with adjustable armrest, driver and passenger vanity mirrors, front seatback pockets, and 60/40 split fold-down rear seat that has a folding center armrest with dual cupholders. An air conditioning and Convenience Package is available, which features power windows with driver's auto down, illuminated switches on all four doors, power heated mirrors and power door locks with keyless entry with panic and six speakers.

Total trunk space comes in at 12.4 cubic feet, and there's a bottle holder and storage pockets located in every door panel, plus storage trays are located in the front and rear.

The Accent delivers a comfortable ride and responsive handling thanks to a front MacPherson strut suspension with coil springs and a coupled torsion beam rear suspension with coil springs.

Antilock brakes are an option as well as 15-inch wheels and tires (14-inch wheels and tires come standard).
