The newest Chrysler Street & Racing Technology (SRT) model also happens to be the Jeep family's fastest vehicle it has ever produced. The Grand Cherokee SRT-8 features a huge 6.1-litre V8 Hemi engine. It's also the first four-wheel drive SRT vehicle.

The Grand Cherokee SRT-8 can reach 96 km/h in less than five seconds, a faster time than both the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the BMW X5. It produces 415-horsepower, which is 85 more horsepower than the 5.3-litre Grand Cherokee.

"Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a well-balanced vehicle with a high fun-to-drive quotient. Inside and out, it is the ultimate performance SUV," said Mike Accavitti, vice president marketing, DaimlerChrysler Canada.

Creating the first ever full-time four-wheel drive SRT vehicle was a challenge for the SRT team. They managed it by using the front half of a Jeep transfer case - chosen for its capability and light weight - and mated it to the rear half of a heavier-duty case, chosen for its ruggedness and ability to house the electronic full-time four-wheel drive system components. The transfer case output shaft was upgraded to handle high torque generated by the SRT 6.1-litre HEMI.

The result is the Grand Cherokee SRT-8's unique transfer case, which provides the necessary power-handling capabilities for the Grand Cherokee SRT-8 while weighing 60 pounds less than a Jeep heavy-duty case.

Under normal conditions, five to 10 percent of torque is sent to the front wheels, but as much torque as needed can be directed to the front wheels.

With the Chrysler Group's 5.7-litre HEMI as a starting point, SRT powertrain engineers developed 25 percent more horsepower by adding more cubic inches, increasing the compression ratio, redesigning the cylinder head, intake and exhaust systems for increased flow, and increasing engine speed, according to Chrysler.

For more displacement, SRT engineers bored out the diameter of the cylinders in the HEMI by 3.5 millimetres each in order to increase the total displacement to 6.1 litres from 5.7 litres.

The ride of the SRT version of the Grand Cherokee is 2.5 cm. (one inch) lower than the regular version, thus lowering aerodynamic drag. To further help the ride and handling, it was fitted with 20-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels coupled with high-performance tires.

There is also an optional Mopar hitch package available. The SRT-8 is capable of towing up to 3,500 lbs.

The exterior is also pure SRT-style, including a lowered, aggressive stance, a rear centre cutout to accomodate dual 4-inch exhaust tips and an all-new front fascia. A roof rack will not be available on the 2006 Grand Cherokee SRT-8. The three exterior colours available will be Bright Silver, Brilliant Black and Inferno Red.

The interior features power-adjustable leather front seats with suede inserts, leather-wrapped steering wheel, instrument-panel brow and shift knob, aluminum finishing on the centre stack, shifter and door-switch bezels. A DVD-based navigation system with voice activation is available as an option.

Safety features include a multi-stage airbag system where the air bag inflates with as much force that's appropriate with the severity of the crash. An anti-lock braking system, energy-absorbing steering column and an occupant classification system (OCS), which measures the conditions for activation or deactivation of the passenger-side front air bag based upon the weight of the occupant.
