Audi is adding to the premium compact ranks with the new-for-2006 A3 hatchback. It features the same engine used in the 2005 A4, the four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged FSI engine.

The 2.0-litre A3 will produce 200-horsepower and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque across a range of 1,800 to 5,000 RPMs. This new engine is the first production unit in the world to combine FSI gasoline direct injection with a turbocharger. According to Audi, this technology allows for "a unique synthesis of high performance, free-revving response and pulling power in all speed ranges, yet excellent fuel economy." The engine will be mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), and both of these options come only in front-wheel drive.

Another engine option will be available in 2006 - a 3.2-litre V6. Combined with Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive, it produces 250-horsepower and 237 lbs.-ft. of torque at a low 2,500 - 3,000 rpm. and will be mated to the DSG tranmission.

The A3 is made up of a MacPherson front suspension and a four-link independent rear suspension. Audi says this setup makes for sporty and agile handling for excellent cornering as well as a high level of comfort. The Audi hatchback uses 17-inch wheels on the 2.0-litre and 18-inch wheels on the 3.2-litre.

Instead of a conventional steering system, the 2006 A3 is fitted with electromechanical steering with speed-dependent power assistance. This results in little vibration from the road.

The interior features a low seating position in the style of other sports cars, a high and wide centre console, round air vents with aluminum surrounds and other aluminum trim elements found throughout.

A generous amount of space is given to both front and rear passengers and the wide-opening rear doors allow for even easier entry and exit for passengers.

There is plenty of standard equipment to be found on the A3. It includes automatic climate control with pollen filter and sun sensor, 140-watt stereo with 10 speakers and satellite radio preparation (for both Sirius and XM), 17-inch alloy wheel, cruise control, power windows, and central locking with remote just to name some of the standard features.

The Sport Package adds a sport suspension, aluminum interior trim, leather covered three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, roof spoiler, fog lights, leather seating surfaces, and sport seats. The Premium Package features everything in the Sport Package (except the sport suspension and roof spoiler) as well as trip computer, auto-dimming mirror with light/rain sensor, and power driver's seat. Both packages come with 16-spoke, 17-inch wheels. Other features that can be added to these packages include Xenon headlights, a Bose sound package with in-dash six-disk CD changer, XM or Sirius satellite radio, and a cold weather package with heated seats, mirrors, washer nozzles, and a ski sack.

Standard safety features on the A3 include electronic stabilization program (ESP), active head restraints on front seats, remote keyless locking and front and side airbags for driver and front passenger.
