Porsche recently gave consumers the first look at its next-generation all-wheel drive 911 model - the 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera 4, both of which will be available in the fall of 2005.

For the first time, two engine options will be available on the AWD Carrera. The first engine is the proven 3.6-litre flat-six cylinder that produces 325-horsepower and moves the car from 0-96 km/h in 4.9 seconds and gives it a top test track speed of 280 km/h.

If that isn't enough, the 2006 Carrera 4S comes with a larger 3.8-litre engine that produces 355-horsepower and allows the car to go from 0-96 km/h in 4.6 seconds and gives it a top test speed of 288 km/h.

The new AWD Carreras have more muscular rear bodywork to help fit the 4's 18-inch tires and the 4S's 19-inch rear tires. The rear fenders are now 44 mm. wider.

Another addition the new Carrera 4 is the Porsche Stability Management system. To enhance braking, the brake system is pre-filled prior to full brake application. This is to eliminate the air gap between the pads and the disk according to Porsche. The company says that the hydraulic pump builds up extra pressure to bring all the wheels into the ABS range if the driver depresses the brake pedal quickly but not forcefully.

The new Carrera 4's all-wheel drive system has a multi-disk viscous coupling that transfers between 5 and 40 percent of the driving force permanently to the front wheels.

For even more handling prowess, the vehicles will be available with Porsche Active Suspension Management for the first time. PASM allows the driver to choose between two suspension settings at the touch of a button - one for more comfort or one for a sportier feel. This is standard on the Carrera 4S and available as an option on the Carrera 4.
