Subaru has introduced the redesigned Forester for 2006 and it features new styling, two new, more powerful engines and of course Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive system.

The biggest new styling change is the front fascia, which features an updated grille, four-lamp headlight clusters, bumper, hood and fenders. The rear features new tail lamp clusters and a body colour trim panel that prominently displays the Subaru six-star emblem.

All Forester models for 2006 that have the 2.5-litre Boxer engine will be designated '2.5 X'. Replacing the 2.5 XS model is the 2.5 X Premium Package. Naturally aspirated models get a boost from 165-horsepower to 173-horsepower in 2006 thanks to Subaru's new i-Active Valve Lift System.

The only turbocharged model for 2006 will be the 2.5 XT Limited and it has a 0-60 mph time of under six seconds with the 5-speed manual transmission. It has 230-horsepower and and 235 lbs.-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm.

The Forester gets refined drivetrain, suspension and braking systems for 2006 for a more comfortable ride and ground clearance is increased from 7.5 inches in 2005 to 8.1 inches for more offroad capability.

Standard features found on all 2.5X models include: front seat head/chest side-impact airbags, four-wheel ABS, 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with single-disc CD player and four speakers, power windows, mirrors and door locks, and a remote keyless entry system. New for 2006, the 60/40 split rear seatback incorporates a fold-down armrest, and the previously optional security system is now standard.

The Premium package adds rear disc brakes, electronic brake force distribution (EBD), 8-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels and a viscous limited-slip rear differential, power moonroof, 8-way power driver's seat, 6-disc in-dash CD changer, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shifter handle and parking brake handle. Since some people will have to deal with cold, snowy winters, it also includes dual-mode heated front seats, heated exterior side mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer.

The 2.5 XT Limited model includes the Premium Package plus leather-trimmed upholstery, a hood scoop and 6-spoke alloy wheels. The interior features luminescent needle pointers and metallic needle caps. Finishing off the look is a sporty looking engine cover underneath the hood.

All 2006 Foresters feature new rear seat cushions which add nearly two inches of thigh support. A new multi-function center console between the front seats has a combination storage box and sliding armrest that contains dual cupholders. They can be flipped 180 degrees to provide cupholders for rear seat passengers. The 2.5 X models include new, upgraded seat fabric and a passenger seatback net pocket.

Cargo capacity in models without a moonroof grows from 32.0 cubic feet behind the rear seat to 57.7 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded down. In models with the moonroof, cargo capacity grows from 29.6 cu. ft. to 56.4 cu. ft with rear seats folded down. Roof rails and crossbars are standard on all Forester models.

The redesigned 2006 Subaru Forester will hit Canadian showrooms in June 2005.
