The new 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 will be the first pickup truck ever to use a multi-displacement system, which turns cylinders off when peak power isn't being used.

The Ram 1500 with the V8 Hemi-powered engine will use the MDS system to increase fuel economy. The system turns off four of the eight cylinders in a matter of milliseconds when peak power isn't needed. Dodge says this will result in fuel savings of up to 20 per cent.

To further increase fuel economy, the 4X4 version is equipped with a front-axle-disconnect system, which disengages the front-axle driveshaft when operating in two-wheel drive.

Dodge spokespeople said that the new Ram 1500 was built to be used in both work and personal use, so a softer ride and suspension was incorporated for use anywhere.

"The ride is refined while controlled, the steering is taut and the cab is quiet," said Mike Donoughe, vice president - body-on-frame product team, Chrysler Group.

The new Ram 1500 suspension features a new coil-over-shock absorber and double wishbone front suspension. The Dodge Ram 1500 4x2 model retains its coil spring, double wishbone independent front suspension and uses a rack-and-pinion steering system with new steering gears on both two and four-wheel drive models.

Three engines are available. The first is a 3.7-litre V6 that come standard on two-wheel drive regular cab and quad cab configurations with the standard (six-foot) bed. This engine delivers 215-horsepower and 235 lb.-ft. of torque.

Next is a 4.7-litre V8 that features a six-speed manual transmission and produces 300 lb.-ft. of torque. Then of course there's the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 which produces 345-horsepower and 375 lb.-ft. of torque.

The exterior has been modified for 2006, with a chrome crosshair grille and distinctive new headlamps featured on the front. The Ram symbol has been moved from the top of the grille to the center of the crosshair and the new halogen bulbs produce 22 per cent more light intensity than the previous Ram 1500.

In addition to the six-foot bed is an eight-foot version. Available trim levels are ST, Sport, SLT and Laramie. A Mega Cab is also available. A new TRX4 Off-Road model is new for 2006 and includes more aggressive off-road tires, painted monotube shocks, tow hooks, skid plates, and a limited-slip differential. The package also includes fog lamps, body-color grille and special decals.

The quad cab includes four standard doors and 60/40 folding rear seats and both the quad and regular cab versions have 40/20/40 front seats that provides seating for three, or two plus storage - the centre console is even big enough to fit a laptop.

Standard are 17-inch tires and steel wheels, though 20-inch chrome wheels are available as an option.

New upscale finishes can be found inside the new Dodge truck. The interior features Maple Pommele accents on the door, chrome on the control knobs and stitched leather seats. A new instrument panel cluster has been moved to reduce glare and the centre stack has a new audio system and HVAC controls. Adjustable pedals are available on models with manual transmissions.

Options available for 2006 include full-screen GPS navigation radio, rear seat DVD player (quad cab only), Infinity sound system and a power sliding rear window.

The new on-demand four-wheel drive system features a locking transfer case with two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive 'high' and 'low' modes. A 'tow/haul' mode is also included.

The Ram 1500 for 2006 has the largest four-wheel disc brakes in the segment. Anti-lock brakes are standard on all models while four-wheel ABS comes as an option.
