Saab has officially entered the sport utility vehicle market in 2006 with the midsize 9-7X SUV. It features the unique and sophisticated character found in most Saab vehicles, as well as sportiness thanks to the choice of a powerful V6 or V8 engine.

The V8 version of the 9-7X features Displacement on Demand, meaning that cylinders deactivate automatically when not needed, such as during highway cruising. This results in improved fuel economy. In this mode, four of the eight cylinders are activated, though there is a seamless transition back to the use of eight cylinders when power is once again needed, according to Saab.

Saab was aiming more for sportiness than pure ruggedness when designing the 9-7X. Design features include Saab's signature three-port grille, rear windows that visually appear to wrap around the D-pillars and wheels that are distinctive to Saab. The 9-7X includes standard 18-inch alloy wheels and combining that to its naturally low stance makes for an even sportier look. The exterior is clean and uninterrupted, with no big bumper offsets, body-side moldings or protruding shapes and forms according to Saab. For more variety, customers can choose from any combination of available colours inside and outside the 9-7X.

Saab says that the interior is focussed on the driver, with a centre stack angled toward the person behind the wheel. The interior also includes features that most Saab fans will find instantly recognizable, such as the sliding-plate air vents, the same cup holder found in the Saab 9-5, and the center console ignition.

A DVD-based navigation system is available and a rear DVD entertainment system can be chosen as an option.

Like all Saabs, the 9-7X is designed to be a driver's vehicle. It features a low ride height with firm front and rear suspensions, a thick front stabilizer bar and stiff upper control arm bushings at the rear.

All-wheel drive is standard on the new Saab SUV, as are 4-wheel disc brakes and 4-wheel ABS. The powertrains in the 9-7X are the 4.2-litre 6-cylinder engine with more horsepower for 2006 (290, which is up from 275-horsepower the previous year), and 275 lbs.ft. of torque. The 5.3-litre V8 delivers 300-horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. These are both mated to a standard four speed automatic transmission. Towing capacity with the V8 engine is 6,500 lbs.

The 9-7X seats five and has split folding rear seats. Cargo capacity with those seats folded down is 80.1 cubic feet and the vehicle has an overall length of 4,808 mm.

Safety features include dual-stage front air bags, head curtain side air bags, and rollover sensing system. Electronic Stability Control is standard equipment, and OnStar will be available as an option. The 9-7X will have standard XM satellite radio for customers in continental U.S.
