The new-generation M-Class sport utility vehicle goes on sale at Mercedes-Benz dealerships across Canada, with a suggested retail price of $55,750 for the V6-powered ML350 and $72,500 for the V8 ML500. Both new models get improved fuel economy, offer more interior space and increased power.

in 1999, the new Mercedes-Benz M-Class inspired the entire auto industry to shift toward more car-like SUVs, with its 4-wheel independent suspension and unibody construction. It ended up with an impressive number of auto industry awards, including the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada's (AJAC) 1998 Car of the Year, and the prestigious North American Truck of the Year.

Larger in every dimension than its predecessor, the new SUV delivers impressive ride and handling through a double-wishbone front suspension and a newly-developed four-link rear suspension.

Also new are standard 7-speed automatic transmission, a more effective permanent 4-wheel-drive system and options such as height-adjustable air suspension. A revised traction control system features a downhill driving aid and hill-start assist.

Power is entrusted to two V-design engines, both of which classify the new M-Class as a super ultra-low emission vehicle. The ML350 is powered by an all-new 3.5-litre, 4-valve-per-cylinder V6 delivering 268 horsepower, 258 lbs.ft of torque. The ML500 gets a 5.0-litre V8 making 302 horsepower and 339 lbs.ft. of torque.

The completely new interior features a sport-oriented instrument panel, a multi-function steering wheel, rich interior materials and significantly improved spaciousness for all five seating positions.

Up to 724 cubic feet of flexible cargo room provides ample space for just about anything owners may wish to carry. The easy-to-operate, fold-down rear seat is split 60/40 for versatility. Optional power liftgate and cargo management system add convenience.

On the safety front, the 2006 M-Class comes standard with two-stage adaptive airbags for the driver and front seat passenger, curtain side airbags and adaptive belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seating positions. A rollover sensor can activate the belt tensioner and curtain airbags if the vehicle senses an imminent rollover.

The new M-Class Sport Utility is built at the Mercedes-Benz production facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
