Ready to go on sale in 2006, the new Volvo C70 is a vehicle that looks just as good with the top up as it does with the top down thanks to a three-piece retractable hardtop.

The new C70 can seat four adults and houses plenty of safety features, keeping true to the history of Volvo. One feature unique to Volvo is the inflatable curtain found in the doors of the C70. Since it is a convertible and it's impossible to put an air bag within the roof, the designers put the inflatable curtain in the doors. In addition to this though, the IC system is extra stiff to help protect occupants' heads better and the air bag deflates slowly in case of a rollover, providing added protection.

According to Volvo, torsional rigidity is improved 10-15% over the previous C70 with the roof up, thanks to a network of beams. Not only does this make it safer, but it also improves its handling and makes it more fun to drive.

Adding to the fun factor is what's found under the hood. The C70 houses a inline 5-cylinder, 2.5-litre turbocharged engine that produces 218-horsepower and offers maximum torque of 236 lb.-ft.

The development and manufacturing of the 2006 C70 was the result of a joint venture between Volvo and Pininfarina. Volvo chose Pininfarina because of its "abundant experience at developing and building convertibles," according to Hans-Olov Olsson, president and chief executive officer of Volvo Car Corporation.

Volvo says that it based the look of the car around a coupe form and did the necessary changes to it to make it into a convertible.
