Kanasaskis, Alberta — DaimlerChrysler was thinking of drivers who miss the old Cherokee when it designed the Jeep Commander, a 7-passenger sport utility vehicle reminiscent of the Cherokee's classic lines.

Jeep will be in the spotlight over the coming year as it introduces three new vehicles: the Jeep Patriot, the Compass Rallye and Commander. You have to go back to 2002 for the last new Jeep, the Liberty (the successor to Cherokee).

To pare development costs and make the most of its resources, DaimlerChrysler has changed its manufacturing strategy and slashed the number of platforms. In 2003, DaimlerChrysler vehicles had 13 distinct architectures. Soon, all its new products will be built on just 3 platforms. The 2006 Jeep Commander therefore shares many features with the Grand Cherokee.

Two models, three engines
The 2006 Jeep Commander comes in two trim levels — base and Limited — with prices starting at $40,865. Both versions have a third row seat, for a total seating capacity of up to seven passengers. The base model boasts a long list of standard equipment and a number of safety features, including side curtain airbags for all three rows of seats. The Limited has extra features for added luxury.

The base Commander comes with a standard 3.7-litre V6 that produces 210 hp and 235 lbs.ft. of torque. It is coupled with a 5-speed automatic transmission. An optional 4.7-litre V8 delivers 235 hp and 305 lbs.ft. of torque.

Commander Limited has the 4.7 V8/5-speed auto standard. But what's a new DaimlerChrysler vehicle without the legendary HEMI engine?

The Commander Limited can be fitted with an optional 5.7-litre HEMI equipped with the cylinder deactivation system (whereby a bank of cylincers is taken offline during casual cruising). It offers 330 horsepower and 375 lbs.ft. of torque. Power transfer is still handled by the 5-speed automatic transmission, but the drivetrain also features a limited slip differential.

V6 equipped Commanders are equipped with the Quadra-Trac I drive system, while those with the 4.7-litre engine sport the Quadra-Trac II system. HEMI models also boast the Quadra-Drive II system, which delivers much better off-road performance.

Clean, classic lines
The exterior of Commander looks much more attractive in real life than in photos. It has classic lines reminiscent of Cherokee, a vehicle many were sorry to see go. Jeep is gambling that Commander will draw disappointed consumers back to the brand.

The Jeep bloodlines are evident at first glance, particularly in the classic front grille. It sports some interesting features, including roof rails that blend harmoniously with the raised part of the roof and ends in a handle on the Limited models.

Inside, the first thing one notices is the spaciousness of the passenger compartment, which is not nearly as tight as in the Grand Cherokee. The stadium design of the three rows of seats affords all passengers a good view. On the other hand, it reduces rear visibility when the third row is up, since the headrests obstruct the driver's vision. Another eye-catcher is the Commander's sun-roof with large glass Command-View skylights that brighten the passenger compartment.

On the road
The "Trail Rated" logo on the body tells you where the Commander is coming from. A true Jeep, the Commander can handle most trails with aplomb. Equipped with the HEMI engine and the Quadra-Drive II system, it becomes a genuine all-terrain vehicle that can carry you over the rockiest ground.

On asphalt, the Commander offers dynamic handling with minimal pitching and rolling due to its precise steering and multi-link independent front suspension. It all adds up to an agreeable drive that doesn't feel at all like a big SUV. The HEMI engine serves up ample power and the MDS system improves fuel economy by deactivating four of the eight cylinders when they're not needed.

I have to admit I was sceptical about this vehicle, both because of the styling and its positioning in Jeep's product line. But Jeep has done its homework — the 2006 Commander is attractively styled and has its own character. Commander is an attractive product which would have been a sure hit a few years ago. How consumers respond in the current market remains to be seen.
