There is one thing the 2006 Grand Vitara has in common with the outgoing model: its name. The Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV has been redesigned from the ground up. It looks different inside and out and features two different drivetrains.

The new Grand Vitara comes in four trim levels: JA,JX, JLX and JLX-leather. The former three come with a full-mode four-wheel drive system while the latter model comes with a four-mode, dual-range four-wheel drive system. All models feature the same lightweight, stiff unibody construction, enhanced with a robust built-in ladder frame.

The new Grand Vitara features 7.9-inches of ground clearance and exceptional structural rigidity to make for improved offroad dynamics, according to Suzuki. It has a fully independent suspension system with MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link system in the back. Seventeen inch tires are available as well.

Standard equipment for when the going gets rough includes Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with traction control and an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD).

Also standard is a 2.7-liter, six-cylinder engine which generates 185-horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. This gives it a 3000 lb. towing capacity. It's mated with a five-speed manual transmission or an optional five-speed automatic.

Inside the Grand Vitara, driver and passengers will find a carefully engineered control layout and close attention to fit and finish, according to Suzuki. Features include climate control air conditioning and micron air-filtration system cruise control, remote keyless entry, digital clock with outside temperature and fuel consumption indicators, and an adjustable center armrest with internal storage. An AM/FM/CD/MP3 XM Satellite Radio-ready audio system and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls is standard. JLX and JLX-Leather models include a six-disc in-dash CD changer with seven speakers including two tweeters and a subwoofer.

Storage space behind the rear seats is a generous 24.4 cubic feet. With the 60/40 rear seats folded down, that number increases to 68.9 cubic feet.

The stamped steel unibody with built-in ladder frame provides comprehensive protection, while the reinforced roof structure and front and rear side impact door beams maintain the integrity of the passenger compartment. In the event of a collision with a pedestrian, The hood is designed to absorb some of the impact and help prevent serious head injuries of pedestrians who may be ht by the Grand Vitara. In addition, the bumper and front end use energy-absorbing materials to reduce the chances of serious leg injuries. Standard are a driver and front passenger supplemental restraint system, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear side-curtain air bags. The three-point driver and front passenger safety belts feature shoulder height adjustment; in the back seat, each passenger has a three-point seatbelt and a headrest.
