Subaru recently launched the new Impreza lineup and as usual, the performance highlight of the family of sedans is the WRX STi, which is redesigned for 2006 and features several performance, safety and interior enhancements.

The first thing Subaru fans may notice is the new front end design that harkens to Subaru's aircraft heritage. It looks very similar to the company's new B9 Tribeca grille. The boldly styled high-intensity discharge headlights feature smoke tinted lenses and the new aluminium alloy hood has a lower-profile hood scoop. The large Brembo disc brakes are clearly visible between the spokes of the 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 17-inch ultra-high performance Bridgestone Potenza summer tiers.

When viewing the rear of the vehicle, one will notice a dual-plane rear spoiler which was inspired by the Impreza World Rally Car. It not only gives the STi a more performance-like look, it also helps reduce lift and improve stability at high speeds. Front and side aerodynamic underbody covers enhances high-speed track stability, and airflow is also managed via front side spoilers on the front bumper and STI-design aerodynamic side ground effects.

The STi is based on the Impreza WRX platform but features several enhancements to provide excellent acceleration, handling and braking. The addition of a steering angle sensor input to the Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD) All-Wheel Drive system enhances power distribution response by more accurately relaying the car's cornering performance.

Every performance fan will want to know what's under the hood of the STi. What they will find is a 2.5-litre horizontally opposed turbocharged and intercooled 4-cylinder engine which produces a generous 300-horsepower at 6,000 rpm and an even 300 lbs.-ft. of torque at a lower 4,000 rpm. In addition to the hood scoop, there is a manually-controlled water spray feature for use in warmer weather. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and the vehicle can go from 0-60 mph in under five seconds.

The WRX STi features Subaru's-own symmetrical all-wheel drive system with the aorementioned DCCD sytem. The system can be set in either automatic or manual mode. In automatic mode, the electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch varies the front/rear torque distribution automatically, depending on driver input and driving conditions. It bases power distribution on vehicle acceleration, deceleration, steering angle, cornering force and wheel slippage.

The DCCD system can also be put into manual mode via a console-mounted button. The driver then chooses from six different levels of centre-differential locking. Increasing the lock factor puts more power at the front wheels, which the driver may want on certain roads or in certain driving conditions. In manual mode, up to 59 percent of the torque distribution can become available to the rear wheels.

The vehicle incorporates inverted struts for the front and rear suspension, which helps increase bending resistance for more consistent performance under hard cornering.

The STi features a more advanced anti-lock braking system due to its high-performance abilities. The Super Sport Antilock Braking system on the WRX STi controls each rear wheel independently - as opposed to as a pair like on most ABS systems - to optimize braking ability during hard cornering to help reduce understeer.

The interior is just as performance-minded as the exterior. It includes a 3-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, front seats with substantial side bolsters and integrated head restraints and embroidered STi logos. The seats also have perforated blue fabric complemented by matching blue door trim and floor carpeting.

The instrument cluster features three main gauges with aluminum trim and red LED indicators. They gauges show a 9,000 rpm tachometer, 260 km/h speedometer and DCCD display. A 6-disc CD changer with six speakers comes standard.

Front seat head/chest side impact air bags (SRS) are standard, and all Impreza models for 2006 get the new Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag system. The driver's side air bag deploys according to the driver's proximity to the steering wheel. In the passenger side front seat, a sensor module detects weight on the passenger seat - determining whether or not its occupied and if so, by a child or an adult - to control air bag deployment.
