The previous M Roadster thrilled motorists with its combination of high-power and sporty manners. Based on the Z3 roadster (the precursor to the Z4), the M roadster amassed sales of 15,000 between 1997 and 2002.

The Z4 M Roadster will use BMW Motorsport's 3.2-litre inline 6-cylinder engine that puts out 343 hp at 7,900 rpm, and generates 269 lbs.ft of torque at 4,900 rpm. BMW says acceleration to 100 km/h should take just 5.0 seconds, with 80-120 km/h acceleration (often referred to as passing time) of 5.0 seconds in fourth gear. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

The drivetrain includes a 6-speed manual gearbox to send power to the rear axle, which also includes the speed-sensitive variable M differential lock used on the M3 coupe and cabriolet. The optimized differential lock enhances the car's stability during cornering and optimizes traction.

Bringing the M roadster to a halt also has to take on a new dimension. It uses the same size 17-inch brake rotors at all four wheels, but features the motorsport-derived floating-compound high-performance system that shortens brake distances to just over 110 feet from 100 km/h. The braking system also features fade compensation and a "standby" feature that preloads the brake linings, to ensure optimum braking response when it's needed (usually on traction-challenged road surfaces).

The M steering also differs from that of the regular Z4s. Both use BMW's electromechanical EPS Electric Power Steering that offers superb damping and feedback. The Z4 M gets hydraulic power assistance for an extra measure of precision.

The M version is distinguished from other Z4s through a unique front air dam with larger air intakes, two precision lines on the hood, double-spoke 18-inch aluminum wheels and double, dual exhaust pipes. Run-flat tires are standard (as they are on all Z4s.

The Z4 M also comes standard with a power roof with glass rear window (other Z4s have manually operated roofs). The trunk is smaller than that of a regular Z4, shrinking to between 7.0 - 7.7 cubic feet (depending on whether the roof is stowed) from the usual 8.4 to 9.1.

Lastly, the Z4 M Roadster also has three unique exterior colours, to go along with all the exclusive M badging/colour trim pieces

Other Z4s also get enhancements for 2006, most notably in the power department, with two variations of the 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder, of 255-hp and 215-hp outputs (achieved through various add-ons and modifications).

All models come standard with the 6-speed manual gearbox, with the 3.0Si having the option of a 6-speed automatic with sequential shift capabilities (executable through steering wheels shift paddles).

The Z4 3.0i starts at $53,900 while the 3.0Si has a base price of $60,900. The muscular M Roadster will debut with a MSRP of $69,900.
