It looks like Ford is putting a little 'Edge' into its Canadian operations, with the announcement that the new Ford Edge crossover utility will be built at its Oakville, Ontario complex.

Edge carries Ford's recent design themes (such as the chrome 3-slat grille) to the truck market, and comes with a powerful and fuel-efficient new 265-hp 3.5-litre V6, advanced 6-speed transmission and fully independent suspension with available all-wheel drive.

"Much like Fusion has done for the mid-size sedan, the new Ford Edge will inject a healthy dose of American design and personality into the hot crossover market," says Peter Horbury, Ford's executive director of North America Design.

Edge is fitted with soft-touch interior materials and features a panoramic Vista Roof. Befiting a wagon, it is extremely versatile, with a fold-down front passenger seat, laptop friendly center console and best-in-class rear space combining for the ability to carry five people, tons of stuff or both.

An extensive list of safety feature includes a solid body structure, advanced airbags and an industry-first AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control and Safety Canopy rollover protection system.

Edge comes in two trim levels, each featuring front- or all-wheel drive. The base Edge SE FWD has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $32,999, while the all-wheel drive version jumps to $34,999. The FWD Edge SEL starts with an MSRP of $35,999. The AWD SEL rounds out at $37,999.

Optional equipment includes a DVD navigation system ($2,700 on the SE, $2,300 on the SEL), a DVD entertainment system ($1,200), a panoramic sunroof ($1,700) and a class II trailer tow ($500).
