Luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz is showing off its newest sport utility vehicle as much of an off-roader as an on-road truck.

The Mercedes GL-Class SUV is a seven-seater that includes two full-size seats in the third row. This third row of seats can be electronically stowed away at the push of a button to make for a flat loading area. Mercedes' Ther-matic automatic climate control system is standard on the GL 320 CDI. This system allows for consistent temperature for all seven seats.

The GL-Class has Mercedes' 4Matic full-time 4-wheel drive functionality. This, combined with speed-sensitive power steering, 3075 mm wheelbase and an air suspension, makes the GL-Class a great fit for offroading according to Mercedes. Even better, the SUV includes Trailer Stability Assist, which applies extra braking when needed in potentially dangerous driving situations while pulling a trailer.

Additional offroad features that are available include Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR), hill-start assist and off-road ABS assist.

Engines available to the GL-Class are a V6 in the GL 320 CDI, as well as a new-generation high-performance V8 diesel in the GL 420 CDI. There is also a 5.5-litre V8 (features earlier in the new S-Class) and a brand new 4.6-litre V8.

The GL-Class also features an available Pre-Safe preventive occupant protection system. This system combines the vehicle's active and passive safety features to make for an even safer vehicle. For instance, active functions such as ABS brakes and brake assist are combined with passive safety components in potential accident situations. The front end of the GL-Class SUV has specific crumple space between the body and the major assemblies underneath, making for extra safety for pedestrians and cyclists in the event they are hit.

Other safety features include 3-point seat belts on all seven seats, optional side airbags for front and middle row occupants and windowbags across all three rows of seats from the A to the D-pillar.

The GL-Class SUV will be available first to U.S. residents in Spring 2006, while European customers will get a chance to drive one in September 2006. The model will be built in the DaimlerChrysler plant in Tuscaloosa/Alabama.
