Pontiac's product resurgence zooms forward with the introduction of the 2007 Solstice GXP roadster (the performance version of one of the most anticipated entries into the new car market) at the 2006 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show.

"Creating a GXP performance edition of the Solstice is a natural extension of the capabilities of this car," said John Larson, Pontiac general manager. "On its own, the base Solstice offers all of the qualities one would expect from a classic roadster — style, crisp handling, and spirited performance. The Solstice GXP takes that pure roadster DNA and pushes it to a new level, with a 47 percent boost in horsepower and other enhancements for a more thrilling driving experience."

Solstice GXP features an all-new direct-injected (a GM first in North America) turbocharged Ecotec 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine, that puts out an estimated 260 horsepower and 260 lbs.ft. of torque.

Lightweight components, an air-to-air intercooling system and dual cam phasing to optimize valve timing all combine to negate the turbo lag common to small displacement turbocharged engines. Direct injection boosts power and economy.

Power is sent to the rear wheels by a standard 5-speed manual gearbox, or an optional five-speed automatic. Either transmission can propel the car from zero-to 60 mph in under 5.5 seconds.

The regular Solstice is powered by a 177-hp Ecotec 2.4 "four", mated to a 5-speed manual.

As with other members of Pontiac's GXP family, Solstice GXP features a number of standard features not available on the base model, including:

  • Unique front and rear fascias
  • High polish, dual-outlet exhaust
  • StabiliTrak vehicle stability enhancement system
  • 3.73 rear axle ratio
  • Unique GXP gauge cluster and Cobalt Red seat stitching

The GXP also comes standard with a number of features available as options on the base model, including:

  • Sport suspension
  • 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS
  • Limited-slip rear differential
  • Power window, mirrors and locks with remote keyless entry
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with accessory controls and cruise control
  • Driver information center
  • 18-inch polished aluminum wheels

Options on the GXP include a rear deck spoiler, leather seating, sport metallic pedals, chrome wheels, OnStar and enhanced audio including XM Satellite Radio.

The 2007 Solstice GXP will be on the road in fall 2006.
