BMW has announced that its Z4 will soon be available in Canada in coupe form, but only as the top-of-the-line M Coupe.

The M coupe is linked to the Z4 M Roadster through the front end's deep air dam with distinct x-shaped lines and openings, the large air intakes in the hood, the sunken kidney grille, and the two creases running the length of the car.

The profile readily depicts a sleek roof extending down to the rear in typical coupe style and the “Hofmeister kink” rear window, a characteristic of all BMW models. The rear wheel arches further the powerful and muscular look, while framing a trunk of 10.5 cubic feet.

Power comes from the same 343-hp 3.2-litre M-massaged straight-6 that also does duty in the M3 and the Z4 M Roadster. The flat torque curve offers up 80 percent of the available 269 lb.ft from as low as 2,000 rpm. Combine that with a power-to-weight ratio of 5.6 lbs./hp, and you can get to 100 km/h, from a standstill, in just five seconds (claims BMW). Power is delivered to the rear wheels by a crisp, short-throw, close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission.

And as with any BMW, handling is entrusted to a high-performance suspension that is derived from that of the Z4 M Roadster but adapted to the particular requirements of a fixed-roof model. The M Coupe also shares chassis and suspension components with the BMW M3. One example is the M differential lock on the rear axle. The car rides on high-performance 225/45ZR18 tires at the front and 255/40ZR18s at the rear.

Inside, the BMW Z4 M Coupe combines a sporting ambience with sophisticated style. Tailored to the driver, all controls and instruments are placed on, or within close proximity of, the steering wheel.

Of course, the car has the usual complement of M specifics — such as sports seat, leather steering wheel and gear shift knob, easily identified gauges with red needles, and chromed door-sill trim strips and vents.

Individualization is available through four leather colours and two choices of soft Nappa leather interiors, as well as a choice of three exterior colours and five appliques.

Other standard features include climate control, on-board computer and tire pressure warning system.
