BMW claims its all-new X5 sport activity vehicle maintains the body and drivetrain concept of the original, while strengthening the core values of driving dynamics, functionality, and exclusivity.

The new X5 features significant improvements in aerodynamics, torsional rigidity, ride and handling (thanks to a unique double wishbone front axle and integral rear axle), vehicle stability (thanks to a lower centre of gravity), and sure-footedness thanks to a new version of BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system.

The exterior evolves the original X5 looks toward those of the smaller X3 introduced last year, with slimming horizontal lines that maintain a sense of muscularity.

The new X5 is also the first vehicle in its segment with Active Steering to improve agility, AdaptiveDrive with rollover protection and adaptive dampers for improved sports manners, and standard runflat tires.

Inside, there's more room for people and their stuff, thanks to the addition of a third row seat (optional) and cargo area that varies from 620 to 1,750 litres. Functionality has also been improved, primarily with the iDrive system that now features 6 presets for all functions (radio stations, navigation locations and telephone numbers). A head-up display is also available.

Options include a multi-channel audio system, rear DVD entertainment system and rear-view camera to assist with parking manouevres.

There are two variants of the new X5. The X5 3.0si is powered by a more powerful version of the 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder engine. Horsepower has been improved by 18 percent, to 260, while torque is boosted to 225 lbs.ft (up five percent from the previous model), resulting in claimed zero to 100 km/h times of 8.3 seconds.

The X5 4.8i features the 4.8 V8 with improvements to 350 hp (up 11 percent) and 350 lbs.ft of torque (up 8 percent). Acceleration to 100 km/h reportedly takes 6.8 seconds. The top speed on both models is capped at 210 km/h and either is linked to an improved 6-speed automatic.
