LOS ANGELES — Volkswagen has unveiled a concept version of the Tiguan sport utility vehicle, nicknamed the “small Touareg”, which will join the Volkswagen road stable in 2007.

The Concept Tiguan is powered by an all-new “Clean TDI” – VW’s next generation diesel engine that employs a modular concept of different systems to significantly reduce emissions beyond what today’s production diesels can achieve. For example, a storage catalytic converter reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) by up to 90 percent compared to today’s engines.

It is also one of the first components of the BLUETEC offensive initiated jointly by Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, to establish a uniform label for clean diesel engines. BLUETEC denotes diesel drives that comply with the strictest emissions regulations of the US market. NOx particulates are the only exhaust components of diesel engines higher than those of gasoline engines, due to the diesel engine design.

Tiguan appears powerful, to emphasize that it is capable of mastering ride requirements in both worlds – of manufactured paths as well as nature’s trails. The Concept Tiguan comes across as self-assured, grown-up and astute, explains Klaus Bischoff, Head of the Design Centre in Wolfsburg, in that it brings the Touareg philosophy of a highly capable touring car/SUV to a different class of vehicle. Yet, it maintains the visual cues of the familiar Volkswagen.

Among the revised but familiar cues are the chrome-surrounded dark-anodized front grille with two dominant cross struts that wrap around the centrally-placed VW logo and flow toward headlamps that join the insignia grille, the bumper and the fenders. The engine hood brings up the headlamps and lends the face a very focused expression. The Xenon headlamps have the appearance of large studio spotlights appearing to float freely behind clear bezels.

In profile, there is nothing to tip off the viewer that this is a Volkswagen, save for the small centre caps on the 19-inch wheels, yet it is readily apparent that Tiguan is derived from Touareg through the slightly rising window line, distinctive wheel arches and unique C-pillar. The Continental tires were hand cut to show an orange radial cord casing that matches the vehicle body colour.

From the rear, there are taillamps familiar to Eos, Rabbit and Passat that are part of the muscular rear fenders. The hatch door extends into the bumper section to create a larger opening and further the SUV theme, as does the darker-coloured lower bumper cladding.

The interior carries on the colur scheme from outside with dark leather seats trimmed with orange stitching and tattoo-like patterns, dark instruments surrounded by chrome rings, black door panels set with silver door handles and brushed aluminum door pulls, and the black dash inlayed with various bright trim panels around the vents and centre stack. Seating is spacious at all five positions, with the 60/40 split rear bench able to be adjusted fore and aft.
