It is awards show season, and the Oscars of the Canadian automotive marketplace are the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) Canadian Car of the Year Awards.

In an early morning ceremony to kick off the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, AJAC announced its 2008 overall winners.

The Canadian Car of the Year is the Audi R8, taken from a short list with the Saturn Astra and the Audi S5. The Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year is the Chevrolet Silverado, beating out the Buick Enclave and the Nissan Rogue.

It's a big year for Audi, as its R8 also took the Best New Design Award. The Best New Technology award was awarded to Ford's Sync connectivity technology.

The winners were decided from data collected at AJAC's annual “Test Fest,” where Canadian automotive journalists who routinely review automobiles put new-for-2008 models through rigorous real world and on-track testing.
