Making its inaugural appearance in Canada (North America in fact) at the 2009 Canadian International Auto Show is the sixth-gen Volkswagen Golf. Known simply as the Mk6 amongst enthusiast crowds, the 2010 VW Golf is still going strong after more than 30 years on the market.

Though its been selling in Europe since January, Canadian suitors will have to wait until the fall before it officially arrives in dealerships here.

Three- and five-door versions will start with a base 2.5-litre engine making 175-horsepower. Others may be offered, including a 2.0-litre TDI that will surface about the same time as the 2010 GTI.

Bigger news perhaps is that VW's DSG (or Direct-Shift Gearbox) will be available. So too will a six-speed manual.

A high-performance GTI with 2.0-litre TFSI powerplant will also be part of the mix; however, the R32 will not be made available initially.

Special edition Beetles will also go on sale shortly.

As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait. The new Golf looks to be one of those things.
