"Fun to drive, with nimble handling"

HISTORY

Based on the 3 Series passenger car platform, the X3 (dubbed a sport activity vehicle, or SAV in BMW-speak), made its debut in 2003 as a 2004 model. It was available with a choice of 2.5-litre or 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engines. The 2.5 was dropped after 2005. Just to confuse us, BMW renamed the 3.0i the 3.0si for 2007 and then changed it again to the xDrive3.0i in 2009 and offered a detuned version called the xDrive2.8i. All models employ BMW’s xDrive AWD system that seamlessly directs torque to the wheels where it’s needed without any driver input. These first generation X3s were built by Canadian-owned Magna International in Graz, Austria. An all new second generation X3, which went on sale as a 2011 model, is assembled in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

THE GOOD STUFF

Fun to drive, with nimble handling, the 2005 X3 3.0i was named Best New Sport Utility Vehicle by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). It has been praised for the responsiveness of its engines and for steering that makes it feel like a sports car. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash-tested an X3 in 2006 and gave it an all-around “good” rating. The cabin is comfortable - even for the tallest driver - and cargo space is excellent. Reliability seems better than average, but remember that any BMW will be expensive to repair.

HEADS UP!

Complaints about the X3’s rough ride and poor interior quality resulted in BMW giving the vehicle an update for model year 2007 with a better ride, a more upscale cabin and smoother exterior styling. Another complaint is that because they lack low range gearing, X3s are not the most able off-road performers. While Transport Canada rated the 2009 xDrive2.8i at a reasonable 12.2 L/100km city and 8.3 highway, all variations of this engine require expensive premium gasoline. The 2.8i engine option was offered only in Canada in an entry level model with standard leatherette interior.

OVERALL

This is not the best riding CUV or SUV, and models equipped with the optional Sport package got an even firmer suspension - and a ride often described as jarring. Be sure your test drive finds some rough, potholed roads. The later 260-hp engine offers better acceleration and is capable of going from 0-100 km/h in less than 7.0 seconds. The X3 was pricier than the competition when new, so as a used vehicle it may not be the best bang for the buck. Shop around.
