Hot on the heels of announcing that its Evoq roadster will see the light of day in some form for 2003, rumours abound that General Motors will develop the Pontiac Piranha concept for debut at around the same time.

Reports state Piranha will be a downmarket version of the Aztek, and it is suggested that the vehicle may be built at NUMMI, GM's joint venture plant with Toyota in Fremont, California.

When it debuted as a concept, GM stated the Piranha was aimed at a younger market, and there's no reason for that to change. The concept shows the vehicle as being on the smaller end of the hybrid chain, but with some off road capabilities, and more futuristic styling cues.

While it's not known how closely the final product will resemble the concept, the prototype resembled a coupe, but with back doors that opened rearward, as well as a roof rack that pops up, and a dual-coloured exterior. There's also lightweight tub-like bedding in the cargo area, that serves as a trunk or a cooler, and can be removed. Once removed the area looks like a flat bed, making the Piranha look like a "mini-pickup," with fold-up tailgate.

The interior is being boasted as customisable, with "zipping" fabric panels that allow owners to change the colour schemes. The four seats are foldable and removable, and according to GM, once outside the vehicle can double as beach chairs.

At the time of conception, the Piranha included a supercharged version of a 2.2 litre 16-valve 4-cylinder Ecotec engine. The model is designed with front wheel drive and a 5-speed automatic transmission, including sequential-shift paddle controls mounted on the steering wheel.
